Irish Fiddle Lessons

General Information / FAQs

Where are the lessons held?
I teach at my studio in Cupertino near Monta Vista High School.
What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle?
Spelling. Okay, that's not a good answer. They are actually the same instrument, the difference comes from the music that is being played...a violinist plays classical or jazz music, a fiddler plays ethnic or folk music.
What levels and ages do you teach?
I teach beginning and intermediate students of all ages, starting at age 6.
How much do lessons cost?
Lessons are $32.50 for a half hour and $60 for an hour.
What is your background?
I started violin lessons at age 10 and played in symphony orchestras through college, where I studied violin privately. I started learning Irish music in 1995 and began playing in bands in 1996. Currently I play for several local dance events and perform with the band Sheltering Sky.
I play classical violin. Can I learn Irish music?
Yes! I have worked with several students who wanted to make the switch from classical to Irish. Your technique and sight-reading abilities will be an advantage and learning to understand the spirit of the music (the 'craíc', in Irish) will be an exciting journey.
Do you teach by ear?
Yes, and I also encourage beginning students to learn to read music. Both skills are extremely helpful in the world of Irish music, although most advanced players do tend to learn tunes by ear and perform without music.
What is a session?
A session ('seisiún' in Irish) is a time for Irish musicians to play a large variety of tunes, learn new ones, socialize, and consume the food or beverage of their choice. Irish sessions are not 'jam' sessions, as everyone is expected to play the same tune at the same time with very little improvisation.
How many tunes should I learn before I go to a session?
None...listeners are always welcome, as long as they behave themselves... New musicians are also welcome to bring their slow tunes along and join in as much as possible - it's an excellent way to learn the feel and flavor of the music as well as a good way to meet other beginning players.
